Episode 180: Calories, Carrie...Do They Matter or Not?

Do you know what calories actually are? We know that seems like a silly question, but when you’ve grown up in diet culture people seem to view calories as an indicator of how healthy or not food is. 


Calories are simply the amount of energy that is in food. Read that again.


250 calories of Oreo cookies is not the same as 250 calories of chicken on a salad, right? The difference isn’t in the energy of the food, it’s the difference of the nutrients IN the food. 


You aren’t what you eat, you are what you absorb! 


Calories have nothing to do with the quality of the food! It’s kind of crazy when you think about it. If you’re assigning a value to food of calories, you’re constantly thinking about counting and that can feel like a lot of brain power. It's literally exhausting!
